Bleeding during pregnancy: what are the reasons

Bleeding during pregnancy: what are the reasons

Just viewing blood stains on the back of your dress is not something to worry for a lady during her pregnancy period. Rather, it is equally important to consider a few more things during her pregnancy period. Panicking in such situation will lead to complications in a lady.  There are many reasons for which a pregnant lady bleeds during the particular period of time. According to the American pregnancy Association, among the list of pregnant ladies, 20-30 percent suffers from bleeding during the early stage of pregnancy. But, among them, many women are associated with healthy pregnancy.

Bleeding during implantation

Some pregnant ladies experience the blood of pink or brown color where there is a procedure of a fertilized egg implanting into the urine lining. This is a situation that is experienced after 6 to 12 days of conceiving. This bleeding is also known as implantation bleeding. The scientific explanation behind it is burrowing of an egg into the uterus, which is backed with a break in mother’s blood vessel. This release small amount of blood from the pregnant ladies’ blood vessel. If the bleeding during the early phase of pregnancy had occurred due to this reason, the flow of blood will last for few hours. But, some women also suffer from this kind of bleeding for a few days.

Irritation in cervix

The cervix is an important part of a woman’s organ which can be affected when there is some disruption or complication in any phase of pregnancy. The blood supply to the cervix is increased in a pregnant woman during the pregnancy period. Since the blood supply is more, the cervix becomes more sensitive. It is even possible to view spotting if the lady puts finger for itching in the cervix area. Bleeding can also take place due to the medical examination of vagina, intercourse etc.

Ectopic pregnancy

In some pregnant ladies, Ectopic pregnancy is very common. This is a situation when the fertilized eggs are not implanted not in the uterus but in some other places. Probably the implantation will take place in the Fallopian tube of a pregnant lady. This is not very normal and can ever cause bleeding in an individual carrying a baby.  The pregnant lady will also face the pain of cramping and unbearable abdominal pain. It is very unfortunate for a lady to have Ectopic pregnancy. If the physician diagnoses this type of pregnancy, there is no other way rather than stopping the pregnancy. The pregnant lady has to abort the baby in such situation.

Problems with placenta

A pregnant lady can face problems due to placental abruption during the second and third trimester of pregnancy. During this situation, placenta gets detached from the uterus wall. The symptoms of this situation will be stomach pain and bleeding. This problem is usually seen during the 12 weeks of pregnancy period.  Since, the placenta in women generally covers an almost or half portion of the cervix, problems in the placenta can be very risky or dangerous for a lady going through pregnancy stage. You must show the doctor immediately.
There are some more reasons for bleeding during pregnancy.

Premature labor

Premature labor occurs when your body starts to deliver too early. It may usually after the 20th week or more than 3 weeks before your due date. On research, there is a treatment where progesterone injection helps to relax the muscle of the uterus. Another treatment called intravenous with magnesium also relaxes the uterine muscles and a medication called terbutaline.

Cervical polyps

Cervical polyps occur, usually diagnosed during a pelvic exam. The growth caused by an increase in estrogen levels, clogged blood vessels, and inflammation in the cervix. Polyps can be removed at a simple outpatient procedure and they are not dangerous to the baby. These are causes of bleeding in early pregnancy and sometimes causes due to miscarriage after the first trimester.

Miscarriage

Miscarriage is the most common cause of bleeding during pregnancy. It occurs in the first trimester cycle of pregnancy because of fetus with chromosomal abnormalities. It may cause due to genetic abnormalities, infection, medications, hormonal effects, structural abnormality of the uterus, and immune abnormalities. The best treatment for this is bed rest while bleeding, no sexual intercourse, and check whether the passage material from the vagina. There are certain symptoms like bleeding persists, pain worsens, fever, weakness, and dizziness.

Uterine rupture

Uterine rupture caused due to weakness in the muscle caused by a previous surgery. There are certain reasons like a C-section or fibroid removal. That area can break open during pregnancy and the baby will be forced into the mom’s abdomen. It is better to have an emergency C-section to save babies and mother.

Molar pregnancy

Molar pregnancy is a very rare condition, caused when a fertilized egg develops into a growth called a mole instead of a baby. Still, you may have some regular pregnancy symptoms even though it is not a viable pregnancy. The mole should be removed with suction and curettage.

Vasa previa

A very rare condition caused when a developing baby’s blood vessels in the umbilical cord or placenta cross the birth canal. It is dangerous because those blood vessels can treat open, causing the baby to bleed and lose oxygen. These blood vessels may break leading to a hemorrhage, if the mother goes into labor. It is recommended to deliver by cesarean section.
